Bad news for anyone planning a trip to Orlando in the coming months: Volcano Bay is temporarily closed, the popular water theme park at Universal Orlando Resort. The closure began on October 26, 2026, and is expected to last until spring 2027.

The closure affects the entire park, one of the most popular water parks in Florida, best known for its enormous 200-foot-tall artificial volcano, Krakatau, which towers over pools, tropical beaches, and thrilling water slides. The good news is that the closure isn’t permanent: Universal has scheduled an extended maintenance period that will keep visitors out of the park for several months.

When will Volcano Bay reopen?

According to Universal Orlando’s official announcement, Volcano Bay is currently scheduled to reopen on or before April 1, 2027. The original announcement listed March 24, but that date was later pushed back by about a week. Keep in mind that the reopening date is subject to change, so it’s worth checking the official park calendar before planning your visit.

If you’re planning to visit Orlando over the Christmas holidays, for New Year’s, or during the winter months, you’ll have to leave Volcano Bay off your itinerary. Fortunately, there’s no shortage of theme parks in Orlando. After all, the city is often considered America’s theme park capital, with countless attractions and experiences to choose from.

Volcano Bay has become a favorite destination for water park enthusiasts, thanks to its Pacific Island-inspired setting and attractions such as the Krakatau Aqua Coaster, a water coaster featuring both drops and uphill sections, and the Ko’okiri Body Plunge, with its breathtaking 125-foot drop through the volcano. It’s easy to see why fans of the park will be eager for it to reopen.

Why is Volcano Bay closed for so long?

The official reason for the extended closure is scheduled maintenance. Universal has not provided a detailed explanation of which facilities and attractions will undergo work, so the full scope of the project remains unclear. Volcano Bay opened in 2017, and maintaining a water park of this size involves everything from pools and water slides to the infrastructure that keeps the attractions running. For now, however, Universal has not specified exactly what improvements visitors can expect.

Will there be new attractions when it reopens?

Universal has not revealed exactly what work will be carried out during the closure, nor has it announced any new attractions for the reopening. So, at least for now, it’s unclear whether the project will focus entirely on maintaining existing facilities or whether there might be something new in store.

Major theme parks usually promote new attractions well in advance, so it would be premature to expect a new pool or water slide. For now, there have been no such announcements, although Universal could share more details in the coming months.

What if you’ve already booked a trip to Orlando?

The good news is that the closure only affects Volcano Bay, not the other parks at Universal Orlando Resort. Visitors can still plan days at Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Epic Universe, the resort’s newest theme park, which opened in 2025.

If you were planning to spend a day at Volcano Bay during the closure, however, you’ll need to adjust your itinerary. In addition to Universal’s other parks, there are plenty of Orlando theme parks to choose from.

Pay attention to multi-park tickets: some ticket packages include admission to Volcano Bay along with other Universal parks. Before purchasing, make sure you check which parks are included and whether your ticket will be valid for the dates of your visit.
