In the northeastern region of California, known as the Mount Shasta Region (named after the volcano of the same name), you’ll find many fascinating waterfalls. After telling you about the unique Burney Falls, today we’re recommending another picturesque stop to include on your road trip in this area: McCloud Falls, a collection of three waterfalls located approximately 18 miles from Mount Shasta. Here’s our guide on how to visit them.

How to Get There

McCloud Falls are located near the town of McCloud in the northern part of California, approximately 93 miles from the Oregon state border. This pristine area is known for its untouched beauty, towering coniferous trees, abundant streams, and tranquil mountain lakes. The climate is extremely cold in winter, but the beautiful summer days can be truly enjoyable, thanks to mild temperatures and breathtaking views characterized by the vibrant greenery of lush vegetation and the vivid blue of clear skies.

This remote and less crowded location is also known for its numerous hills, towering peaks, and essential roads. The waterfalls are easily accessible by car: driving along the spectacular Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway (Highway 89 in this stretch), approximately six miles from McCloud, you will turn following the signs for the Lower Falls and Fowlers camping. From there, you can choose to continue to the free parking area of the Lower Falls (1.2 miles) or the Middle Falls (1.6 miles). There is no entrance fee, and the parking areas are also free.

Great Shasta Rail Trail

Great Shasta Rail Trail

Running almost parallel to Highway 89 is the Great Shasta Rail Trail (GSRT), a trail spanning nearly 80 miles that connects McCloud to Burney. Even by covering just a small portion of this route, one can understand that what now lies as a distinct dirt trail was once the tracks of a railroad. The old McCloud River Railroad, used for transporting timber for almost a century, has been brilliantly converted into the current unpaved pathway open to non-motorized activities such as hiking, jogging, horseback riding, cycling, or cross-country skiing.

The flat route, which literally cuts through the vast forest of coniferous trees, is constantly overseen by the majestic Mount Shasta, a dormant volcano standing abruptly at an elevation of 14,179 feet, towering above the surrounding valley. Currently, only half of the GSRT route is open; however, the nonprofit organization of the same name has plans to restore and complete the entire connection over the next decade, adding a valuable recreational resource for the entire area.

For avid movie enthusiasts, several scenes from the cult film “Stand by Me” (1986) were filmed at various points along the GSRT. The famous suspended railroad bridge over the Pit River, where the four friends risk their lives due to the unexpected passage of a train, is part of a section of the trail that is still closed, making it prohibited to cross. McCloud Falls Hike

McCloud Falls is a great option for a few hours’ stop during the exploration of the northern part of California. There are three waterfalls that are formed by the varying levels of the winding McCloud River: Lower Falls, Middle Falls, and Upper Falls. For those who wish to visit them on foot, the three waterfalls are conveniently connected by the McCloud Waterfalls Trail. Alternatively, all three levels can be reached by car in separate stages by taking the McCloud River Loop, a peaceful paved road that connects them.

Lower Falls

Perhaps the most visited level, not so much for the spectacularity of the waterfall but for its accessibility. The parking area is very close to the rapids, allowing easy access to get closer and comfortably enter the cool and clear water for a pleasant swim. In the area, there are also many benches and picnic tables available for a snack or meal.

Middle Falls

Middle Falls is certainly the most spectacular waterfall of the three. From the parking area, you can quickly reach the viewpoint where you can admire the impressive wall of water, approximately 46 feet wide. From the observation point, there is also the opportunity to descend along the designated path towards the large water pool and explore the falls from a close and privileged position.

If the temperature permits, it is truly worth stopping here for a swim, venturing under the waterfall, or simply enjoying a relaxing sunbath. Unlike many other larger waterfalls with a higher water flow, this one, so well-proportioned and accessible, allows you to experience its power and spectacularity up close.

Upper Falls

The drop of this waterfall is not very high, and the rocky canyon where the current flows energetically is definitely worth a visit. The rapids can be explored by taking a short walk along the river from the parking area to various viewpoints. The path winds through dense forests, and it is not uncommon to encounter gentle deer looking for a snack, especially near the picnic areas.

The walk that allows you to reach the three levels of the waterfalls on foot is quite straightforward. It is a round trip of approximately 3.7 miles with an elevation gain of 338 feet. The trail, partly paved and partly unpaved, runs alongside the river and provides exclusive panoramic views of the river and its waterfalls. During less crowded hours, walking the entire trail offers moments of peace and complete immersion in untouched nature. The sound of rushing water, the rustling of the wind through the tree branches, and the chirping of the many bird species present will serve as the main soundtrack for the hike.

Places to Eat Near the Falls

In McCloud, one of the best diners to enjoy lunch is definitely the White Mountain Cafe (243 Main St). The perfect and charming retro atmosphere competes with the delicious food carefully prepared on the spot. The only downside is that it is open for dinner until 9:00 PM and only from Thursday to Saturday.

The Black Bear Diner (401 W Lake St), located in the town of Mt. Shasta, is a true local institution. The menu is diverse, although the most popular dishes remain the timeless American classics. However, the real highlight of this restaurant is the view of Mount Shasta. The volcano can be appreciated during the meal from any point of the establishment, thanks to the huge windows overlooking the outside.

Places to Stay Near the Falls

In the area, you can find all types of accommodations to spend one or more nights. For those who want to stay in close contact with nature, the popular Fowlers Campground, located near McCloud Falls, offers everything this type of accommodation can provide: campsites with picnic tables and barbecue pits, restroom facilities, and potable water.

On a different note, there is the McCloud Hotel located in downtown McCloud. This hotel is characterized by an exceptionally warm atmosphere, thanks to its traditional and well-maintained common areas and the exquisite finishes chosen for the elegant and clean bedrooms.

As for motels, the Cold Creek Inn in Mount Shasta is recommended: very comfortable and clean rooms, convenient parking, and picturesque surroundings.
