On the most famous tourist route of the city of Los Angeles, Hollywood Boulevard, you can visit many of the top United States museums. Recently, another one opened there – the Medieval Torture Museum. This is the 3rd location of this franchise of interactive museums, the previous two in the cities of St. Augustine (FL) and Chicago (IL) were very popular among locals and tourists.

The idea of creating a historical museum, where the exhibits can be touched and actuated, came to the founder after visiting of the Museum of Torture in European Prague, where rather curious things were behind glass and were annoyingly inaccessible. The emergence of the interactive Museum of Torture was preceded by a thorough study of historical sources and the involvement of many artists, craftsmen, designers and other experts.

What to see in the Medieval Torture Museum

The Torture Museum exhibition covers about 5,000 sq. ft. You will need 45 to 60 minutes to complete it.

Torture devices and execution instruments

Visitors will be presented with more than 300 different torture and restraint devices, as well as instruments of execution from simple shackles with a stone to such sophisticated execution mechanisms as the Blood Eagle or the Pendulum. Hundreds of historical and original pictures illustrate the exhibition.

Realistic wax figures

Most museum scenes contain realistic wax figures among which are victims of torture with signs of torturing, as well as executioners engaged in their cruel trade. You will meet revolutionaries, merchants, ordinary peasants and real criminals who got into the bloody meat grinder of the torture chamber.

Audioguided tour

Each scene of torture and execution is provided with an audio guide (English or Spanish) that the visitors can download to their smartphone. The audio guide will tell you about the method of using the torture device, the history of its creation and for what crimes people were subjected to this torture.

Interactive exhibits

Visitors can touch exhibition items or put them into action and discover the impact they had on people centuries ago. They can also take any photos and videos, for example, entering a cage or placing their hands and head in a pillory.

Ghost hunting experience

Ticket price includes Ghost Hunting Experience – an interactive entertainment via mobile app. Players will be able to catch ghosts directly in the Museum of Torture during the tour and learn their terrible stories.

Content creation

Due to the effective visuals and almost cinematic lighting, the Medieval Torture Museum has become a place regularly visited by TikTok and Instagram influencers. Each exhibit can be a photo or video spot and at the end of the tour, a separate room awaits visitors, where specially designed interactive photographic exhibits are collected.

Mission and Motto

Even with such emotionally heavy and brutal content, the Medieval Torture Museum has a rather humanistic mission. This place contains terrible evidence of the cruelest inhumanity with the aim of reminding people of the dark side of progress and civilization. This was done to remind people that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
